The Budget: Fiscal Year 1997-1998

BOARD OF PROBATION AND PAROLE

The budget provides an additional $4 million to the Board of Probation and Parole to further reduce caseloads to supervise paroled offenders. The recommended $57 million budget would allow the board to reduce average caseloads to nearly 60 offenders per agent. Two years ago average caseloads were above 100.

The budget continues funding for the Drug Offenders Work Program, a program using intense probation supervision and mandatory community work experience as an alternative to incarceration. Funds for Adult Probation grants are increased modestly to $17 million.
