FUMO SAYS LOEPER SHOULD RESIGN HARRISBURG, November 2, 2000 – State Senator Vincent J. Fumo (D-Philadelphia) today called on Senator F. Joseph Loeper to resign immediately from the state Senate. Loeper, a Republican from Delaware County, has admitted violating federal tax laws and has indicated he will plead guilty next week, but said he will retain his Senate seat and Majority Leader position until the end of this year. "Joe Loeper is my friend and I have supported him financially, professionally and emotionally during the lengthy investigation into his finances," Fumo said. "On a personal level, I will be extremely sorry to see him leave the Senate. But now that he is about to plead guilty to a serious crime, I believe it would be in his best interest as well as that of the commonwealth and in particular the Senate for him to resign before we return to legislative session. "It pains me greatly to have to witness all of this, but it is now up to Joe to do the right thing and step aside," he added. # |
